Brock is a main character in the Pokémon anime as well as the main series Pokémon games. Brock appears as the Pewter City Gym Leader originally in Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue and their remakes, Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen. He makes an appearance again in Pokémon Yellow and later appears in Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver and their remakes Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver as the same Gym Leader.

In the Anime, Brock joins Ash on his journey in Kanto after Ash's first and very hard-fought Gym battle. Brock decides to venture with Ash, with his father's consent, because he'd been taking care of all his siblings for so long that he needed to focus on himself. Brock is older than Ash, and frequently acts as a mentor. He is typically known as Ash's best friend in the series, traveling with him through the most regions.

In The Anime

Brock is the wise character foil to Ash's rash nature. He is very intelligent and frequently gives insight into Pokémon, their natures, abilities and evolutionary form - this makes him a natural choice as a Pokémon breeder.

As the seasons progress, Brock is shown to be extremely knowledgable about Pokémon illnesses and how to cure them.

On top of this, Brock always cheers along his friends in battles and contests. While doing so, Brock gives good insight into attacks and moves the Pokémon use and his opinion on whether it is a smart choice. He is never quick to criticize and usually supports his friends' decisions.

Brock is a top chef and while the gang camp out along their journey, he often cooks meals for both the team and their Pokémon. The Pokémon love Brock's special blends of Pokémon food and other trainers ask Brock for his recipes throughout the show.

Brock is pensive and very serious when it comes to not only the health and well-bring of Pokémon, but also when the group is stuck in a messy situation. Brock often offers solutions and ways to get out of any mess they're in. After the first few seasons, Brock's family is mentioned very rarely in the show, as well as his post as former Gym Leader, usually only mentioned in the presence of other Gym leaders.

Brock moves along with his quest to become a top breeder and, while in Sinnoh, decides he wants to take his knowledge of breeding and put it towards becoming a Pokémon Doctor; this is further verified when Brock receives a Pokémon egg that hatches into a Happiny.

Nurse Joy/Officer Jenny

A recurring joke in the series is Brock's love of any Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny. Whenever Brock meets either, he loses his cool and makes affectionate gestures towards them - usually making them, and his friends, uncomfortable. In later seasons, Max of Hoenn and Brock's Croagunk in Sinnoh would interrupt his speeches of devotion to Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy and pull him away.

In The Games

Brock plays a major part of the Main Series games, as the Pewter City Gym Leader, the first Gym Leader the player encounters in the Kanto Region.

In Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver, Brock can be registered in your phone and re-challenged after the Player receives all 16 badges in-game. He will also trade the player a Rhyhorn for a Bonsly.

"I'm Brock! I'm Pewter's Gym Leader! I believe in rock hard defense and determination! That's why my Pokémon are all the Rock-type! Do you still want to challenge me? Fine then! Show me your best!"
  • Pokemon Yellow Version Quotes
"I'm Brock! I'm Pewter's Gym Leader! I believe in rock hard defense and determination! That's why my Pokémon are all the Rock-type! Do you still want to challenge me? Fine then! Show me your best!"
"So, you're here. I'm Brock. I'm Pewter's Gym Leader. My rock-hard willpower is evident even in my Pokémon. My Pokémon are all rock hard, and have true-grit determination. That's right - my Pokémon are all the Rock-type! Fuhaha! You're going to challenge me knowing that you'll lose? That's the Trainer's honor that compels you to challenge me. Fine, then! Show me your best!"
"Wow, it's not often that we get a challenger from Johto. I'm Brock, the Pewter Gym Leader. I'm an expert on Rock type Pokémon. My Pokémon are impervious to most physical attacks. You'll have a hard time inflicting any damage. Come on."
