Cloyster has two different Abilities: Shell Armor, which prevents Cloyster from taking a critical hit, and Skill Link, which allows for attacks that hit 2 to 5 times to always hit 5 times. Cloyster's Hidden Ability is Overcoat, which allows it to be immune from the effects of weather, as well as powder moves.
Cloyster is in the Water 3 Egg Group, and its Egg approximately takes 5,120 Steps for it to hatch. It takes Cloyster 1,250,000 Experience Points to reach Level 100.
Cloyster's design is based off a clam shell. Its main body is a black pearl, which is encased in a light grey shell. This shell is protected by a larger, spiky purple shell. Its face consists of two large eyes, and a wide smile.
Cloyster does not have any distinctive features to differentiate between the male and female.
In most of its game appearances, the only way to obtain Cloyster is by evolving a Shellder with a Water Stone. In Pokémon Black and White, however, it can be caught in the wild at Route 13, Undella Town and Undella Bay by fishing in shaking spots. In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, it can be caught at Route 13, Undella Town, Seaside Cave and Humilau City by the same method.

Cloyster resides in the Underused (UU) tier of competitive battling. With a great boosting move in Shell Smash, Cloyster makes for a nice sweeper and cleaner. Skill Link is a great ability that gives Cloyster a reliable multi-hitting STAB in Icicle Spear. With its potential wallbreaking power, Cloyster can also provide offensive support for other sweepers to take advantage of weakened defensive Pokémon. Cloyster is not without flaws, as its defensive typing and stats outside of its meaty 180 Defense are subpar, making it hard to set up without a Focus Sash. Cloyster also has immense trouble getting past bulky Water-types, which can take a boosted Rock Blast from Cloyster without too much trouble. However, Cloyster can weaken those Water-types with a boosted Explosion, which while sacrificing Cloyster does open up an opportunity for another Pokémon to take advantage of the weakened foe.
Cloyster is also a viable option in the Uber tier of competitive battling. With access to a whole variety of support moves such as Rapid Spin, Spikes, and Toxic Spikes, Cloyster makes for a great utility Pokémon for offensive teams. A great offensive typing, access to a multi-hitting STAB in Icicle Spear, and an amazing boosting move in Shell Smash allow for Cloyster to heavily pressure Defog users and suicide leads like Deoxys-S. Cloyster can also effectively soften up certain Stealth Rock users like Primal Groudon and Dialga with boosted Icicle Spears, allowing for another Pokémon to take advantage and prevent them from setting up hazards. However, Cloyster cannot pressure some of the bulkier Defog users such as Water Arceus and Mega Scizor. Cloyster also needs a great deal of team support to do its job effectively and requires very aggressive gameplay to be of good use. Despite this, it can control the entry hazards in favor for sweepers and wallbreakers to take full advantage.
