Arcanine can use one of two Abilities: Intimidate, which reduces the Attack of its opponents by one stage when it enters battle and at its start; or Flash Fire, which makes it immune to Fire-Type moves and increases the power of its Fire-Type moves if it gets hit by one. Its Hidden Ability is Justified, which increases its Attack by one stage if it gets hit by a Dark-Type attack.

Arcanine is a part of the Underused (UU) tier of competitive battling. With Intimidate and semi-reliable recovery in Morning Sun, Arcanine can act as a defensive Fire-type, a niche that not many other Pokémon in UU can boast. It has solid physical bulk when backed up with Intimidate and can cripple physical attackers with Will-O-Wisp. Arcanine can also run an offensive set thanks to its great coverage moves in Crunch, Close Combat, and Wild Charge to complement its STAB Flare Blitz and priority Extreme Speed. However, Arcanine suffers from being weak to Stealth Rock, which can undermine its defensive capabilities quite a bit while shortening the longevity of offensive sets. Arcanine also faces competition as an offensive Fire-type from Entei, which has higher Attack and access to the coveted Sacred Fire.
