Baton Pass is a Normal-Type move introduced in Generation II. This unique move allows the user to switch Pokémon during the attack phase of the turn (as opposed to when selecting moves). This has various advantages, such as protection from Pursuit and allowing a slower Pokémon to take damage that would normally be dealt to the Pokémon that switches in. U-turn and Volt Switch also have this effect, but causes normal attack damage at the same time.

What separates Baton Pass from both U-turn and Volt Switch is that passive effects attached to the current Pokémon will be passed on to the next one. For example, if the current Pokémon is using the healing effects of Aqua Ring and uses Baton Pass, the Pokémon that switches in this way will keep the healing effect.
