Chesnaught resides in the Underused (UU) tier of competitive battling. With a high base 122 Defense and good support movepool that includes Spikes, Leech Seed, and Spiky Shield, Chesnaught is a solid defensive Pokémon in the tier. It can handle physical threats very well due to a typing that allows it to take on threats like Krookodile and Feraligatr while having a great ability in Bulletproof that prevents it from being damaged by attacks like Sludge Bomb that would put a heavy dent in Chesnaught. Its best set is a physically defensive support set with Spikes to support a team, but it can also use a specially defensive set to act more as a mixed wall or a fast Taunt set that prevents slower Defoggers from removing entry hazards and defensive set-up Pokémon like Cresselia from setting up. Chesnaught's biggest flaw is its lackluster Special Defense and Speed stats that when uninvested can be easily exploited by any decently strong and fast special attacker.
Chesnaught is also a viable option in the Overused (OU) tier of competitive battling. With great physical defense and a decent defensive typing, Chesnaught is capable of handling numerous threats in the tier like Excadrill, Tyranitar, Bisharp, and Mega Lopunny. A great ability in Bulletproof allows it to be immune to attacks like Shadow Ball, Sludge Bomb, Focus Blast, and Gyro Ball. A good support movepool with Spikes and Leech Seed allow for Chesnaught to support a team relatively well, while a nice STAB move in Drain Punch can heal up Chesnaught and deal decent damage. However, Chesnaught has some significant weaknesses to Fire, Flying, and Ice attacks, all of which are prevalent in the tier. Low Special Defense and Speed stats hamper Chesnaught quite a bit as it is weak to many special attackers and cannot outspeed other certain defensive walls. It also faces big competition as a defensive Spikes user from Ferrothorn, which has a better defensive typing and Special Defense stat.
