Cottonee can use one of two Abilities: Prankster, which increases the Speed Priority of Status category moves by 1, and Infiltrator, an Ability that nullifies the effects of moves such as Reflect and Light Screen. Its Hidden Ability is Chlorophyll, which doubles the Speed of this Pokémon when it is sunny. Speed does not double on the same turn in which the weather becomes sunny, however.

Cottonee doesn't have any distinguishable characteristics to help differentiate between male and female.
Cottonee can be found inside the Pinwheel Forest, the Abundant Shrine and the Lostlorn Forest in Pokémon Black only. In Pokémon Black 2, Cottonee appears at Castelia City, Pinwheel Forest, Lostlorn Forest, Abundant Shrine and Victory Road. To obtain Cottonee in Pokémon White and Pokémon White 2, you must trade for one, normally with someone who has a Pokémon Black Game Card.
However, there is an in-game trade that is exclusive to Pokémon White that allows one to obtain a Cottonee. There's a female trainer in Nacrene City that will trade you a Cottonee if you trade her a Petilil. The same in-game trade exists in Pokémon White 2, but this time the Petilil for Cottonee trade is made at Route 4, and the Cottonee that you receive is holding a Power Weight.
While Cottonee has to be transferred in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, Wild Cottonee can be found at Petalburg Woods in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire by using the DexNav feature on the PokéNav Plus, after the capture or defeat of Groudon or Kyogre.
Cottonee is a Version-Exclusive in Generation VII, appearing in the wild at Malie Garden, Melemele Meadow, Poni Meadow, Poni Plains, and Ula'ula Meadow in Pokémon Sun. A Transfer via Pokémon Bank or a Trade is required to get one in Pokémon Moon.
Wild Cottonee can be found at Mountain Pass, Inflora Forest, Breezy Plains and Ivy Park in Gates to Infinity. A connection in Baram Town has to be made in order to recruit Cottonee in Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon.
Cottonee appears at Windmill Way in the Arbor Area in PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond. Defeat it in a tag race to befriend it.
Cottonee appears at Greenleaf in Pokémon Conquest.
