Pokémon Information

Competitive Battling

Donphan is a part of the Underused (UU) tier of competitive battling. With good Attack and Defense stats to work with, Donphan can act as a nice physical tank that can support a team relatively well with Stealth Rock and Rapid Spin. Its access to Rapid Spin is great as it is the only Rapid Spin user that is not weak to Electric attacks. The best Donphan set is a defensive spinner set that acts as a sturdy defensive presence. Another viable set is a Choice Band set that can hit relatively hard and has surprisingly good coverage with moves like Knock Off, Ice Shard, Gunk Shot, and Seed Bomb. Lastly, Donphan can run an offensive spinner set with either an Assault Vest or Leftovers, with the former patching up Donphan's mediocre Special Defense and the latter giving Donphan the option to run Stealth Rock. Donphan's biggest flaw is its weakness to Ice, Grass, and Water, all of which are very common in the tier. It also suffers from being rather slow, lacking reliable recovery, and having subpar Special Defense without an Assault Vest.
