Empoleon's Torrent Ability increases the power of its Water type attacks when its HP falls below one-third of its maximum, while its Dream World Ability Defiant increases its Attack Statistic by two stages whenever one of its stats are lowered by an opponent's attack, but not as a result of stat deductions that are self-inflicted or caused by an allied Pokémon's attack.
Empoleon takes on the appearance of a blue emperor penguin.
Empoleon has no distinguished features that make it appear male or female.
Empoleon can only be obtained by evolving a Prinplup.
Empoleon can obtained at The Ice Lake in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, and is required to reach Almia Castle. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, Empoleon appears at the Cave Entrance on Mt. Sorbet in the Present, and is the Boss of the Ice Temple Mission Round and Round! Find the Floor! in the Past. Defeat it and clear the mission with an S Rank to obtain it.
The only way to obtain an Empoleon in Pokémon Conquest is to evolve a Prinplup.
Trading Card Game
Empoleon is listed in a total of six sets and a Diamond/Pearl Promo (Lv. X Card). Empoleon is listed as a Rare Card in the Diamond and Pearl, Majestic Dawn, Stormfront, Platinum, and Supreme Victors (Frontier Brain Card) sets. A second Empoleon can also be found in the Diamond and Pearl set, but the second one is an Ultra Rare Lv. X Card.
Barry uses an Empoleon during many of his appearances starting with the episode Barry's Busting Out All Over!. Kenny would debut an Empoleon in the episode Last Call, First Round!, having evolved from his Prinplup in between appearances.
Lady Platinum Berlitz' Prinplup would evolve into an Empoleon during Manga Chapter 360 as the result of working out on the fitness machines at the Veilstone Department Store.
Empoleon is a part of the Underused (UU) tier of competitive battling. With a great typing that gives it many key resistances and good overall bulk, Empoleon makes for a great defensive Water-type Pokémon. Access to utility moves like Stealth Rock, Roar, and Defog allow for it to support a team very well. Its good Special Attack stat and coverage options allow for it to even run a more offensive approach with an offensive Defog set or its classic Agility set with a Petaya Berry and Substitute to knock itself into Torrent range. However, Empoleon does face competition from other bulky Water-types, and its Fire neutrality and Ground weakness do hold it back a bit in comparison to other Water-types that can handle threats like Entei and Mamoswine. Empoleon also lacks reliable recovery and can be worn down by moves like Knock Off and Scald, with the former removing Empoleon's Leftovers recovery and the latter potentially burning Empoleon.
Empoleon is also an option in the Overused (OU) tier of competitive battling. With a great typing, Empoleon is capable of checking numerous threats like Latios, Manaphy, and Mega Altaria. It can be great for role compression due to its access to both Stealth Rock and Defog, while it is one of few Defog users to resist Stealth Rock. However, Empoleon is quite a passive Pokémon that has to rely on Scald burns to do significant damage while phazing set-up sweepers with Roar. Sometimes Empoleon actually loses to Pokémon that it's supposed to beat like Calm Mind Clefable in a last Pokémon situation. It has common weaknesses to Ground, Fighting, and Electric attacks, while it also lacks reliable recovery and cannot constantly check certain threats unless it has Wish support.
