Golbat (ゴルバット) is the 42nd Pokémon in the Pokédex. It is a Poison/Flying Type, and it is known as the Bat Pokémon.

Golbat uses the Inner Focus Ability. This Ability protects it from flinching except when attempting to use Focus Punch. Its Hidden Ability is Infiltrator, which nullifies the opponents' defensive screens, such as Safeguard, Reflect, Light Screen or Substitute.

Zubat can evolve into Golbat starting at Level 22. Starting with Generation II, a Golbat that becomes loyal to its trainer and levels up will evolve into a Crobat. This is known as a Friendship Evolution.

Golbat is in the Flying Egg Group, and its Egg takes approximately 3,840 Steps to hatch. It takes a Golbat One Million Experience Points to reach Level 100.

In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, in addition to being found in many late-game caves, Golbat can also be caught at Route 227 during the night. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, it can be found in many of the same places as the original games, but can also be found at the Savannah and Mountain areas of the Safari Zone during the night.

In Pokémon Black and White, Golbat can be caught in the wild at Route 13 and Giant Chasm. In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, it can be caught at the Dreamyard, Celestial Tower and Strange House.

In Pokémon X and Y, the only way to obtain Golbat is by evolving a Zubat. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, it can be caught in the wild at Cave of Origin, Meteor Falls, Scorched Slab, Seafloor Cavern, Sealed Chamber, Shoal Cave, Sky Pillar and Victory Road.

In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Golbat can be caught in the wild at Mount Lanakila, Resolution Cave, Thrifty Megamart - Abandoned Site and Vast Poni Canyon.

Anime/Manga Information

Anime

Koga would use a Golbat after the resumption of Ash's Gym Battle against him. Ash's Charmander would defeat Golbat to win the Soul Badge. Ash would face off against a different Golbat in the opening round of the Indigo League, this time as the third and final Pokémon of Mandi. Mandi's Golbat would fall to Ash's Kingler, finishing off a sweep in Ash's first Indigo League match.

Brock would also get a Golbat towards the end of the episode Hassle in the Castle after it evolved from Zubat. It would evolve a second time into Crobat during the episode Control Freak.

Other trainers that have used Golbat include Agatha, along with members of Team Magma and Team Galactic.

Movies

Brock's Golbat appeared during the events of Mewtwo Returns. Wild Golbat appear in the films The Power of One and Destiny Deoxys, along with the Pikachu Short Pikachu's Ghost Festival.

Manga

Koga would use a Golbat in Chapters 14, 29-32, 70-72 & 85. Agatha would use her own Golbat to battle against Koga in Chapters 71 & 72.

Petrel, a part of Team Rocket's Four Generals, uses a Golbat to fly around in Chapters 447 & 454-456.

Wild Golbat also make appearances in Chapters 150, 195, 276, 277, 379 & 380.

Pokémon Information

Competitive Battling

Golbat is in the Rarelyused (RU) tier of competitive battling. Thanks to its access to Defog and fairly good bulk thanks to Eviolite, Golbat is a capable support Pokémon. It has a good defensive typing that allows for it to handle threats like Venusaur and Virizion, and it also has reliable recovery in Roost. With Infiltrator, Golbat can Toxic certain Substitute users like Meloetta and Braviary, crippling them from being able to steamroll through a team. Super Fang and Taunt are also highly useful moves, with the former wearing down at Steel-types and the latter shutting down entry hazard users and other certain threats. Golbat can run either a physically defensive or specially defensive set depending on what it wants to check. However, Golbat is weak to some common attacking types in Rock, Ice, Psychic, and Electric. It also does not match up well against Stealth Rock users like Rhyperior which can just set back up Stealth Rock after threatening Golbat out. Steel-types are highly problematic for Golbat to deal with, although Taunt and Super Fang can alleviate this issue. Even though it is not a bad Fighting-type check due to a x4 resistance to Fighting attacks and having STAB Brave Bird at its disposal, Golbat is heavily crippled if it loses its Eviolite due to Knock Off, a move that many Fighting-types run.
