Pewter City

This is the first gym of the game. The trainers of the Pewter City gym use rock-type Pokemon, making it tough to damage them physically unless you're lucky enough to have a fighting-type Pokemon, like Mankey at this point in the game, or unless you have Metal Claw on Charmander. Otherwise, Vine Whip from Bulbasaur or Bubble/Water Gun from Squirtle will be your main key to victory.

Cerulean City

This is the second gym of the game. It is a good idea to have Level.19 Pokemon. Pikachu, or Ivysaur is something I would recommend. Wartortle could be helpful because neither type affects the other.
