Heliolisk can use one of two Abilities: Dry Skin, which restores its HP when it is raining or hit by a Water-Type move, but HP will be reduced during periods of strong sunlight whilst making it vulnerable to Fire-Type moves; or Sand Veil, an Ability that increases its Evasion by one stage during a Sandstorm. Heliolisk's Hidden Ability is Solar Power, which increases its Special Attack by 50% during periods of strong sunshine, but some HP is lost each turn.
Heliolisk takes on the appearance of a yellow lizard with orange zig-zag patterns on its legs. Its tail has an orange and black tip. Around its neck is an orange scarf that resembles a sun when looked at from above.
Heliolisk doesn't have any visible differences to differentiate between male and female.

Heliolisk is a part of the Underused (UU) tier of competitive battling. Thanks to a great 109 base Speed that puts it ahead of Pokémon like Cobalion and Infernape to complement strong overall coverage and a good 109 base Special Attack, Heliolisk can be a great offensive threat to have on a team. Its movepool consists of various coverage moves, from Grass Knot to Surf to Focus Blast, and with great STAB attacks in Thunderbolt and Hyper Voice, Heliolisk can pose a serious problem for opposing teams. It has Dry Skin, which can help immensely against Water-types and allows for it to check Pokémon like Feraligatr and Crawdaunt that have priority Aqua Jet. Access to Volt Switch means that Heliolisk can pivot out and gain momentum for the team. However, Heliolisk suffers from being weak to common attacking types in Ground and Fighting. Its physical bulk is absolutely pitiful, which means that even resisted hits can deal a heavy amount of damage. Heliolisk is also forced to use a Life Orb or Choice Specs to get the most out of it, which can lead to it either getting worn out or being locked into an unfavorable move.
