Heracross () is a Pokémon introduced to the series in the Gold and Silver editions of the game. Generally a rare find, it is valued for its great offensive power among many. It is among few Pokémon that has always been a prevalent force in the meta game and even fewer to always improve each passing generation due to various move gains.
Among its pool of destructive moves are Megahorn, Close Combat, Swords Dance, Stone Edge, Night Slash, and Pursuit. It can fit into several roles, most notably as a great user of Choice Band and Choice Scarf. However, due to having fairly average speed, many Pokémon are capable of scaring Heracross out of the battle arena. On the plus side, it has few genuine counters (Gliscor and Weezing being the best).

 Competitive Battling
Heracross resides in the Underused (UU) tier of competitive battling. With a high base Attack, great offensive typing, and strong STAB moves in Close Combat and Megahorn, Heracross is a very potent offensive threat. With two great abilities in Guts and Moxie, Heracross can perform certain different roles as a powerful wallbreaker and status absorber or a late game cleaner. Its typing allows for it to check certain threats like Krookodile, while its Speed is fast enough to outpace certain walls. Its best set is a Guts Choice Band set that can wreck status spreaders like Sableye and do heavy damage with its STABs and coverage moves like Knock Off and Stone Edge. Another Heracross set is its Swords Dance set that can power through defensive behemoths and can opt for a Toxic Orb to utilize an extremely powerful Facade. Lastly, Heracross can opt for a Choice Scarf set that bolsters its Speed stat while giving it the ability to be a late game cleaner when gaining Moxie boosts. However, Heracross does struggle against a decent chunk of the offensive Pokémon in the tier that can outspeed it, and it struggles with Fairy and Flying-types.
Heracross is also viable in the Overused (OU) tier of competitive battling. Even though Mega Heracross overshadows its base form quite a bit, Heracross can hold its own due to a Toxic Orb Guts set that can act as a ridiculously powerful wallbreaker after a Swords Dance boost. Strong STAB attacks in Close Combat and Megahorn along with a Guts-boosted Facade makes Heracross a legitimately scary threat to deal with. However, Heracross's Speed is lackluster and leaves it vulnerable to being revenge killed by numerous threats in the tier, which makes it a niche Pokémon at best in OU.
