Lapras can use one of two Abilities: Water Absorb, which gives it an immunity to Water-type moves, recovering 25% of its Maximum Hit Points each time hit by one, or Shell Armor, which gives it an immunity to critical hits. Its Hidden Ability is Hydration, which restores its status problems at the end of the turn when in the rain.
Lapras does not evolve and doesn't have a pre-evolved form.
Lapras' design is based off a variety of marine creatures, including the Loch Ness monster. It is blue in color, with its lower jaw and underside being a cream color. It has darker blue spots in various places on its body, and has a long neck, a small horn atop its head and curled ears. Its hard, grey shell on its back has many small protrusions scattered along it, and it swims using its four flippers.
Lapras have no gender differences.
As well as the gift Lapras that is given at Silph Co., it can also be caught in the wild at Icefall Cave in FireRed and LeafGreen.
In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Lapras appears in Victory Road in an area that can be accessed once defeating the Elite Four. In addition to the Lapras at Union Cave, it can also be caught in the Rocky Beach area of the Safari Zone in HeartGold and SoulSilver.
Trading Card Game
Lapras is listed in 13 sets, the Southern Islands and HeartGold/SoulSilver Promo sets. It is listed as a Common Card in the Versus (2), Skyridge and Platinum sets; as an Uncommon Card in the Next Destinies set; and as a Rare Card in the Fossil (2), EX Ruby and Sapphire, EX Legend Maker, Great Encounters, HeartGold/SoulSilver, Next Destinies and XY sets.
Ash would find a beached Lapras at Tangello Island. With the help of Tracey, the Pokémon was delivered to the Pokémon Center after Ash stopped three local punks from physically abusing it. Ash would capture that Lapras and would eventually deliver it back to its family, but not before transporting Ash, Misty, and Tracey around the Orange Islands, and eventually helping Ash win the Orange League. Ash's Lapras also appeared in the episode Lapras of Luxury.
Other trainers have also used Lapras, including Pryce and Solidad.
Ash's Lapras was a major part of The Power of One, as it was ferring Ash & Company between the islands in order to bring the natural order back into balance whilst Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres were fighting.
Wild Lapras also made appearances in Pikachu's Vacation, both Pikachu's Winter Vacation shorts, Heroes - Latios & Latias, Pokémon Ranger & The Temple of the Sea, and Zoroark - Master of Illusions.
Lapras finds itself in the PU tier of competitive battling. With a solid STAB combination and Freeze-Dry to destroy common Water-type checks like Politoed and Roselia, Lapras has a nice niche over other offensive Water-types like Simipour. With Water Absorb, Lapras can comfortably switch into one of the tier's biggest threats in Floatzel, serving as a nice wallbreaker with some role compression to benefit its overall team. It is best used as a Choice Specs attacker that uses its STAB attacks to break through defensive cores. However, Lapras suffers in its weakness to Stealth Rock and common attacking types like Grass, Fighting, and Electric, which makes it somewhat reliant on team support. It is also relatively slow, leaving it vulnerable to being revenge killed.
Lapras is also viable in the Neverused (NU) tier of competitive battling. It sports great neutral coverage due to having a good Water STAB and Freeze-Dry, with the former allowing for it to hit common Freeze-Dry switch-ins like Piloswine and Fire-types, while the latter gives it the ability to hit Pokémon like Lanturn and Mantine super effectively. It has impressive natural bulk, a x4 resistance to Ice-type attacks, and Water Absorb, giving it decent defensive utility. On the flip side, however, Lapras is weak to common attacking types in Grass, Fighting, Electric, and Rock. It is weak to Stealth Rock, limiting the number of times it can switch in. Lapras is also a bit on the slow side, leaving it outsped a number of threatening Pokémon in the tier. It has to rely on Choice Specs to get the most power out of it due to a rather average Special Attack stat.
