Alolan Marowak is in the Overused (OU) tier of competitive battling. With resistances and Lightning Rod to serve as an Electric immunity, Alolan Marowak can check a number of threatening Pokémon in the tier such as Mega Medicham, Magearna, and Tapu Koko. With Thick Club to boost its Attack stat to high levels and decent bulk, it can serve as a solid offensive check while hitting very hard with its STAB attacks like Shadow Bone and Fire Punch, which are terrific in conjunction with each other. With Swords Dance, it can do significant damage to opposing stall teams if they lack an Unaware user like Quagsire or Pyukumuku. Rock Head can be used instead of Lightning Rod so that Alolan Marowak can take full advantage of STAB Flare Blitz without having to suffer recoil damage. This gives it a nice niche on teams that utilize Trick Room. Will-O-Wisp gives it the ability to soft-check non-Knock Off Mega Mawile, burning it while avoiding Sucker Punch. Unfortunately, Alolan Marowak suffers greatly from having a weakness to Stealth Rock and being affected by entry hazards, so it needs hazard removal support to function well. It has a low Speed stat that does it no favors, making it so that it needs to tank a hit before dishing out one. Having to hold Thick Club means no Leftovers recovery, so it can be worn down quite a bit from continuous attacks. With a lot of weaknesses to common attacking types, Alolan Marowak is quite susceptible to some of the biggest threats in the tier like Greninja and Landorus-T.
