Mega Alakazam uses the Trace Ability which copies the special Ability upon entering battle. In a double battle, it has an equal chance of copying either opponent's Ability.
Alakazam can Mega Evolve into Mega Alakazam if it is holding an Alakazite.
Mega Alakazam resides in the Borderline (BL) tier of competitive battling, meaning that it is not used enough to be a part of the Overused (OU) tier but is too broken to be in the Underused (UU) tier. With a high 175 base Special Attack and a stellar 150 Speed that puts it well ahead of the majority of the unboosted metagame, Mega Alakazam is a legitimately scary threat in the Overused tier, being able to act as a revenge killer and potential late-game sweeper. Its ability Trace allows it to revenge kill weather sweepers such as Sand Rush Excadrill and Kingdra. Mega Alakazam also has Encore which can lock Pokémon like Bisharp into Sucker Punch or Ferrothorn into Stealth Rock, and this can allow for other Pokémon to take advantage. Mega Alakazam's inherent flaw lies in its dreadful physical bulk and poor defensive typing, which leaves it vulnerable to the omnipresent Knock Off and priority attacks. It also relies heavily on entry hazards to nab KOs due to its inability to hold another item other than its Mega Stone that can boost its power like a Life Orb.
