Competitive Battling

Mega Houndoom is in the Borderline 2 (BL2) tier of competitive battling, meaning that it is banned from the Rarelyused (RU) tier but not used enough to be a part of the Underused (UU) tier. As one of the dominant forces in XY UU, Mega Houndoom suffered a major fall from grace in UU as Pokémon like Mega Aerodactyl, Feraligatr, Gyarados, and Hydreigon became heavily prevalent in the tier. Despite this, Mega Houndoom still holds its own very well in the tier due to a very high 140 base Special Attack and nice 115 base Speed. Nasty Plot is a great boosting move that makes Mega Houndoom very difficult to wall, while its ability Solar Power makes it a viable sun wallbreaker. Mega Houndoom is capable of wreaking havoc on defensive teams and can stop them cold with Taunt or break through bulky Water-types with Solar Beam when using the Sunny Day set. Its typing allows for it to take advantage of the presence of Pokémon like Sableye and Chandelure. However, Mega Houndoom is quite weak to many common threats like the ones mentioned before, and its bulk is pretty average.

Mega Houndoom is also a niche offensive threat in the Overused (OU) tier of competitive battling. With a typing that allows it to check Pokémon like Mega Sableye, Bisharp, and Latios, Mega Houndoom is definitely capable of bringing decent offensive utility to the table. It also has some good support moves that allows for it to get past troublesome Pokémon, as common switch-ins like Tyranitar and Azumarill are crippled by Will-O-Wisp while defensive Pokémon are shut down by Taunt. Mega Houndoom also has Nasty Plot and a high Speed stat that can allow for it to sweep opposing teams. However, Mega Houndoom is weak to Stealth Rock, hampering its switch-in opportunities. It is also weak to numerous common Pokémon like Keldeo, Mega Altaria, and Heatran.
