Mega Salamence (Mega Evolution of Salamence activated by using Mega Stone, was revealed on August 8, 2014 after a leak of the September Edition of CoroCoro, alongside Mega Altaria and Mega Lopunny. It retains its Dragon and Flying-typings.), the
Mega Salamence is a part of the Uber tier of competitive battling. With a powerful 145 base Attack and high 120 base Speed bolstered by a phenomenal ability in Aerilate, Mega Salamence is a ferocious threat in Ubers and manages to stand out as one of the tier's most powerful forces. Thanks to solid 95/130/90 defenses and having Intimidate before Mega evolving, it finds numerous opportunities to set up while having good defensive utility in being able to check threats such as Primal Groudon, Ho-oh, and Extreme Killer Arceus. These hugely positive traits allow it to find a role on many Uber teams due to its overall sweeping and revenge killing prowess. Mega Salamence's best set is its Dragon Dance set that can demolish opposing Pokémon that do not resist its Aerilate boosted Double-Edge or Return while being able to cover its bases with either coverage in Earthquake to take care of Pokémon like Arceus-Rock and Tyranitar, Substitute to prevent it from being revenge killed too easily, or Refresh to overcome annoying statuses like burn and paralysis. A bulkier approach to a Dragon Dance set can act as a solid check throughout the game to threats like Ho-oh while still maintaining great sweeping prowess due to its strong STAB attacks. If one chooses to use Mega Salamence in a fully defensive role, it can phase set-up sweepers with Dragon Tail while having reliable recovery in Roost and a great utility move in Defog. The only flaws in Mega Salamence are that it has some glaring weaknesses in Ice attacks and Stealth Rock, but otherwise, it is one of the best Pokémon in the Uber tier and a threat that must be accounted for.
