Mega Sceptile takes on a number of different changes after undergoing Mega Evolution. Its tail, which has a red tip, resembles a fern tree, and there are red stripes on its tail. The two stripes closest to its main body each have a pair of red seeds on them, with the other three sets of seeds retaining their yellow coloring.
Mega Sceptile now appears to have wing-like growths on its back and arms; although it doesn't fly it moves very fast. Its head has also changed shape, taking on a dragon-like appearance.
Mega Sceptile doesn't appear to have any differences to differentiate between male and female.

Mega Sceptile resides in the Underused (UU) tier of competitive battling. With great offensive stats, a very high 145 Speed, and a wide movepool, Mega Sceptile is a very strong offensive threat that can put heavy pressure on opposing teams. It can outspeed a lot of threats in the tier like Alakazam, Azelf, and Cobalion, while having the power to take care of them with a powerful attack. Its ability Lightning Rod is decent as it allows for Mega Sceptile to serve as a check to Electric-types. Its typing allows for a decent amount of switch-in opportunities for Mega Sceptile to wreck havoc. Its best set is an all-out attacking set with strong STABs like Leaf Storm and Dragon Pulse while having good overall coverage in Focus Blast or Hidden Power Fire. A Substitute set allows for Mega Sceptile to take advantage of the switches it can cause and prevents it from being statused while retaliating with strong hits. A Swords Dance set is another approach that takes Mega Sceptile's decent 110 base Attack to surprise opposing Pokémon like Blissey and Florges. Despite these great qualities, Mega Sceptile is not flawless, as it does have some common weaknesses and is frail.
Mega Sceptile is also a viable option in the Overused (OU) tier of competitive battling. It has a good matchup against offensive teams due to being the fastest Dragon-type allows it to revenge kill opposing Dragon-types like Latios, Latias, Garchomp, and Mega Charizard X. Mega Sceptile can also use Leaf Storm to destroy opposing frailer threats like Mega Lopunny, while its ability to check Water-types like Rotom-W and Manaphy can come in handy. Thanks to Lightning Rod, Mega Sceptile can check certain Electric-type threats like Mega Manectric, Raikou, and Thundurus, with the latter not being able to paralyze Mega Sceptile. However, Mega Sceptile is pretty frail and cannot take most forms of priority very well. Its Special Attack stat is less impressive than it looks due to an inability to hold a boosting item like Life Orb, and it lacks a reliable and powerful STAB move, which puts it at a disadvantage against defensive teams.
