Ther are two types of Nidoran, Male and Female. Each one has a slightly different moveset, and evolves into different Pokémon. Nidoran M evolves into Nidorino and Nidoran F evolves into Nidorina, then a Moon Stone is needed to evolve those into either Nidoking or Nidoqueen. They were commonly used to defeat Brock in Pokémon Yellow version due to Electric-Type moves not effecting Ground-Types, and the ability to learn the Fighting-Type move Double Kick.

One major difference between the Male and Female Nidoran: a Female Nidoran can only breed prior to evolving. After evolving into Nidorina--and subsequently Nidoqueen--it becomes a part of the Undiscovered Egg Group and cannot breed. Male Nidoran can continue to be involved in breeding after evolving.
