Pinsir (カイロス) is the 127th Pokémon in the Pokédex. It is a Bug type, and is known as the Stag Beetle Pokémon.

Pinsir can use one of two Abilities; Hyper Cutter, which makes it immune to opponents dropping its Attack Stat, however, it may still drop its own Attack stat with moves like Superpower; or Mold Breaker, which cancels any ability that would prevent the Pokémon from attacking while said Pokémon with this ability is in battle. Its Hidden Ability is Moxie, which raises the Pokémon's Attack by one stage whenever it KO's another Pokémon.

Pinsir does not evolve into any other Pokémon up to Generation V. Starting in Generation VI, a Pinsir can evolve into a Mega Pinsir during battle by using a Mega Stone.

Pinsir is in the Bug Egg Group, and its Egg takes approximately 6,400 Steps to hatch. It takes Pinsir 1,250,000 Experience Points to reach Level 100.

Competitive Battling

Pinsir is in the Neverused (NU) tier of competitive battling. As one of the only notable offensive Bug-types in the tier, Pinsir stands out due to its high Attack stat, good coverage, access to Swords Dance, and two great offensive abilities in Mold Breaker and Moxie. It is best used as a Swords Dance sweeper that has solid coverage and can either ignore certain abilities like Levitate with Mold Breaker or have snowballing potential with Moxie. A Stealth Rock set is also usable, as Pinsir can bypass Magic Bounce due to Mold Breaker, making it able to give trouble to teams that use Xatu as their primary source of entry hazard control. Lastly, a Choice Band set gives Pinsir immediate power and allows for it to run an extra coverage move, giving it more flexibility in its wallbreaking potential. However, Pinsir is weak to Stealth Rock and vulnerable to all forms of entry hazards, and its typing gives it little in terms of useful resistances. Its Speed stat is only decent, meaning that it can be rather easily revenge killed by faster threats, and while it can take a hit from a Fighting-type Pokémon, it in turn cannot actually significantly dent Fighting-types. Pinsir also has a rather underwhelming STAB attack in X-Scissor, which is only 80 base Power, which is much lower in comparison to other common physical attackers' STABs.

Silver Swings its long antlers wildly to attack. During cold periods, it hides deep in forests.

Trivia

  • When Pokémon was originally thought of, Game Freak was going to make Pinsir evolve into Heracross. Heracross, like many other Pokémon, did not make the cut of 151. So when they were making Gold & Silver versions they were going to make Pinsir evolve until they realized they were not very alike.
