Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness is a follow on from Pokémon Colosseum. It is an all new creature-collecting role-playing Pokémon game for the Nintendo GameCube. Pokémon XD retains the basic monster-battling formula as its predecessor, but with a longer, single-player game and a few minor game play tweaks to address some common complaints about the previous game. As a result, the only people who will really appreciate this game are those who are already familiar with the series (i.e. those who own/have played Pokémon Colosseum).
Gale of Darkness takes place five years after the events in Pokémon Colosseum. The story starts off with a massive shadow Pokémon attacking a cargo ship in the middle of an ocean. It turns out that the cargo ship was filled with powerful, and dangerous Shadow Pokémon. If you played Colosseum, you'll remember that shadow Pokémon are exactly the same as regular Pokémon except that they have "closed the door to their hearts" and have become aggressive toward humans. The group that staged the ship heist is known as Cipher, and as you learn more about them you'll find out that they basically want to collect all the Shadow Pokémon to create an army of evil creatures to take over the world. You play as a young boy who also happens to be a gifted Pokémon trainer, so it's up to you to thwart Cipher's plans and purify all the Shadow Pokémon.
You start the game off with an Eevee, who soon later evolves into Jolteon, Vaporeon, Flareon, Espeon or Umbreon. You are able to choose which form it takes on so you can get your preferred evolution out of the five.
It is mainly the exact same game as Colosseum, except from the fact that is based 5 years later with a slightly different plot line. You travel throughout the region in search of Shadow Pokémon to Purify, and in search for Professor Krane, who has been kidnapped by Cipher.
You can save your game file at a PC or heal your Pokémon at a Pokémon Center.
 New Features
- Poké Spots - Poké Spots give you the chance to catch Wild Pokémon. There are three different Poké Spots; Oasis, Cave and Rock. Once you have captured a Pokémon from a Poké; Spot, you can trade them in-game for a different Pokémon. In order to catch one of the Pokémon, you must lay a Poké Snack, then checking on your radar, you will be able to know when the right time is to catch the Pokémon. But watch out, or Munchlax might eat your food before others come!
- Purification Chamber - In Colosseum, Pokémon were able to be purified one at a time in Agate Village. Now, you can place a Pokémon in a Purification Chamber (along with other Pokémon), to purify your Pokémon. This process is much quicker than the old way and it is the only way to fully purify the Shadow Lugia that is obtained in the game.
- Shadow Pokémon - As seen in Colosseum, the Shadow Pokémon are back! In order to capture them from evil trainers, you must snag them with the Snag Machine on your arm. In order to tell if a Pokémon is a Shadow Pokémon, you use the radar eye-piece, which straight away notifies you of the Shadow Pokémon. These Shadow Pokémon have Shadow Attacks, special Shadow attacks only Shadow Pokémon can learn. To trade the Shadow Pokémon over to FireRed/LeafGreen/Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, they must first be purified. Another addition from Shadow Pokémon is that most trainers now have multiple Shadow Pokémon, with some of the Cipher Peons having up to 3.
