Pokémon is a general term used for the creatures in the world of Pokémon. There are 493 known Pokémon, some with multiple formes. They are often captured by trainers to battle with, participate in contests, or just kept as pets or friends. When trainers use their Pokémon in battles against others, they gain experience points which, when high enough, level up which brings up the Pokemon's stats and may evolve it. As they grow, most learn new, more powerful moves which, overall, bring up the potential of the Pokemon.
In Japan, Pokemon are also referred to as "Pocket Monsters".
