Politoed can use one of two Abilities: Water Absorb, which heals up to 25% of its maximum HP should it get hit with a Water-Type move; or Damp, which prevents Self-Destruct and Explosion from working whilst in battle. Its Hidden Ability is Drizzle, which changes the weather to heavy rain upon its entry into battle.
Poliwag can evolve into Poliwhirl at Level 25, and can evolve into a Politoed if it is traded while holding a King's Rock. Alternately, a Poliwhirl can evolve into a Poliwrath by using a Water Stone on it.
Politoed is in the Water 1 Egg Group, and its Egg takes approximately 5,120 Steps to hatch. It takes Politoed 1,059,860 Experience Points to reach Level 100.
Politoed takes on the appearance of a light green toad with a greenish-blue antenna. It has a green line on its yellow stomach that curls back towards the top, but doesn't form into a spiral like its previous forms. Its toes, hands, and chin are also yellow, which also feature red cheeks.
Politoed doesn't have any visible differences to differentiate between male and female.
Politoed can be found at Route 6 in Black and White; and Routes 6, 19, 20, Clay Tunnel, Floccesy Ranch, Lostlorn Forest and Victory Road in Black 2 and White 2. In both sets of games Politoed can be found at the aforementioned areas by Fishing with a Super Rod at Shaking Spots.
In Pokémon X and Y, Politoed can be caught in the wild at Route 19 by fishing with a Super Rod. In Pokémon Sun and Moon, it can be caught at Malie Garden by being called on in an S.O.S. Battle while it is raining during the night.
Politoed makes appearances at Endless Level 61, Pair Trozei, Forever Level 11 and Mr. Who's Den in Pokémon Trozei!.
The only way to obtain a Politoed in the first set of Mystery Dungeon games is to evolve a Poliwhirl. In Explorers of Time, Explorers of Darkness and Explorers of Sky, Politoed can be found at End Lake B1-B24. Politoed appears in all three versions of Mystery Dungeon 3, appearing in each games' Secret and Legendary-themed areas.
Politoed only appears during Missions in Pokémon Ranger. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, Politoed can be found at the Entrance of Canal Ruins in the Present; and in the Ice Temple mission "Round and Round! Find the Floor" by defeating it and obtaining its Slate.
Politoed can be found at Everspring Valley Lake 4-2 in Pokémon Rumble Blast after completing the game.
Trading Card Game
Politoed is listed in six sets and the 5th Movie Halfdeck. It is listed as a Common Card in the Versus Set; and as a Rare Card in the Neo Discovery (2), Skyridge, EX Unseen Forces (EX Card), Legends Awakened and Unleashed sets.
Misty's Poliwhirl would pull the King's Rock out of Ash's backpack, evolving into a Politoed in Outrageous Fortunes. Politoed would continue to make appearances through Gotta Catch Ya Later! and Cerulean Blue.
Gold would evolve his Poliwhirl into a Politoed via a trade with Silver at Tin Tower.would get the opportunity to train alongside Red's Poliwrath on Mt. Silver.
Politaro makes appearances in Chapters 109-113, 145, 154, 164, 172, 180, 335, 441-444, 448, 453 & 459.
In Generation VI, Politoed resides in the PU tier of competitive battling. With the massive weather nerf in Generation VI, Politoed's dominance in the OverUsed (OU) was no more and the ban on Drizzle in the UnderUsed (UU) tier prevented Politoed from commanding a dominant playstyle in the lower tiers, forcing it to the bottom tier in PU. In PU, Politoed is a good blanket check to Water-types thanks to its coveted Water immunity courtesy of Water Absorb. It has decent offensive power and can annoy opponents with Scald and Encore which makes it a candidate for a tank set, but is lacking in Speed and physical bulk. It also lacks reliable recovery and is susceptible to being worn down by strong coverage moves.
In OverUsed (OU), Politoed is still a very viable Pokemon despite the weather nerf and commands the rain playstyle that can wreak havoc with its Swift Swim users. Politoed can support a number of Pokemon like Kabutops, Kingdra, and Mega Swampert, who benefit from Politoed's Drizzle ability and can sweep teams with their strong Water STABs and much improve speed due to Swift Swim. Politoed is capable of playing the support role well with moves like Perish Song and Encore. However, Politoed lacks reliable recovery, which limits its support capabilitites and forces it to use Rest to have lasting power. With rain lasting only 8 turns when Politoed is equipped with a Damp Rock, rain is no longer the dominant force it was in Generation V and limits the amount of turns rain sweepers have to heavily dent opposing teams.
