Porygon can have one of two Abilities: Trace, which copies the Ability of its opponent, making that Ability its own until Porygon is switched from battle; or Download, which will increase either its Attack or Special Attack Statistic depending on the lower of the two defensive stats of its opponent. Its Hidden Ability is Analytic, which increases its Attack power by 30% should it be the last Pokémon to attack on a particular turn.

Porygon is genderless, and therefore does not have any gender-specific features.
Porygon is only available from the Game Corner in both Generation I and Generation II, but one will need a lot of Coins to get one. This also holds true in Fire Red, Leaf Green, Heart Gold and Soul Silver.
Diamond and Pearl introduce an alternative method to getting Porygon, as it appears in the Trophy Garden as one of the Daily Pokémon. A Porygon can also be obtained in Platinum by going to the house up and right of the Pokémon Center in Veilstone City.

Porygon's first appearance was in the episode Electric Soldier Porygon, which did not air outside of Japan. This episode would be an infamous moment in the history of the series, which sent 800 kids to the hospital in Japan due to the constant flashing sequences in the episode. The incident nearly cancelled the series and Nintendo would have been to blame if that had happened.
A Wild Porygon made a cameo appearance in the episode A Chansey Operation.
Porygon made an appearance in Heroes: Latios & Latias.

- Its signature moves, Conversion and Conversion 2, allow it to temporarily become any of the other 17 elemental types. Because of this, it is one of seven Pokemon (the others being Arceus, Kecleon, Greninja, Silvally and the rest of the Porygon evolutionary line) capable of becoming a pure Flying type; the only default pure Flying type is Tornadus.
- Porygon is the only Pokémon that evolves twice by being traded while holding a certain item.
