Pyroar can use one of two Abilities: Rivalry, which increases its Attack when going against a Pokémon of the same gender, but lowers its Attack against Pokémon of the opposite gender; or Unnerve, an Ability that prevents opposing Pokémon from consuming their held Berry whilst in battle. Pyroar's Hidden Ability is Moxie, which increases its Attack by one level each time it KO's an opposing Pokémon.

Pyroar takes on the appearance of a dark lion with light colored paws and at the end of its tail. Its mane takes on a red-and-yellow pattern that is flame-like in appearance.
A Male Pyroar has a mane similar to a male lion, whereas a Female Pyroar has fur of a similar coloration that grows from its head to the middle of its tail.

Pyroar is in the Neverused (NU) tier of competitive battling. Thanks to a high Special Attack stat and great Speed stat, Pyroar is an extremely threatening offensive Pokémon that stands out as one of the tier's best powerhouses. It has powerful STABs in Fire Blast and Hyper Voice that can hit a lot of the tier very hard, and it can burn some of its common switch-ins like Thick Fat Hariyama and Archeops. With a decent defensive typing, Pyroar can switch into Pokémon like Lilligant without too much issue. Pyroar's best set is a special attacker set that uses either a Life Orb or Choice Specs to heavily damage opposing foes with its STABs and hit Rock-types that try to switch in with a Hidden Power Grass. Pyroar's flaws lie in its lackluster bulk and vulnerability to entry hazards, which can hinder its longevity quite a bit. Pyroar's STAB combination leaves it open to being taken advantage of by certain Rock-type Pokémon, although it has ways to circumvent the issue. It also is vulnerable to a lot of forms of priority, from Samurott's Aqua Jet to Hitmonchan's Mach Punch. It faces competition from Magmortar and Charizard as a Fire-type wallbreaker, as both have superior bulk and coverage to hit opposing foes that Pyroar cannot hit due to its barren offensive movepool.
