Pokemon: Indigo League follows a boy named Ash Ketchum, who has turned 10 years old and is excited to become a Pokemon Trainer. He decides to go on a Pokemon journey with the goal of becoming a Pokemon Master. The original 3 starters weren't available for selection, so his only option was a Pikachu. Ash chooses him without hesitation, and the two set off on their journey throughout the Kanto region. Ash meets Misty, whose goal is to become the greatest Water Pokemon Trainer, and Brock, whose goal is to become a Pokemon Breeder. Both, Misty and Brock eventually decides to accompany Ash on his journey.

After completing in the Pokemon League in Kanto and reaching the Top 16, Ash, accompanied with Misty, and Brock set out for the Orange Islands, specifically Valencia Island, to meet with Professor Ivy to receive a GS Ball, as requested by Professor Oak. Brock decides to remain as an assistant to Professor Ivy, while Ash and Misty head off, in which they eventually meet Tracey. Tracey explains to Ash about the Orange League and what he needs to do in order to participate. Ash makes the decision to travel the Orange Islands and compete, with Misty and Tracey accompanying him.

After successfully completing the Orange League and earning his trophy, Ash returns to Kanto, where he eventually learns from Professor Oak about the Johto region. He requests Ash to give the GS Ball to Kurt. Also, Ash decides to travel to the region to collect Gym Badges, in hopes of competing in the Johto League Silver Conference. Misty decides to accompany Ash once again, while Tracey remains in Pallet Town to become Professor Oak's assistant. Brock, on the other hand makes an appearance and decides to rejoin the group, as they set off for the Johto region.

In the end, Ash improved and managed to come into the Top 8. As the original series come to a close, Ash, Misty and Brock return to Kanto and decide to go their separate ways. Ash eventually decides to head to the Hoenn Region after learning about the location from the trainer he lost to in the Johto League, with his Blaziken, leading to the Advanced Generation Series.

The US dub of the orignal series is comprised into five seasons:

  • Pokemon: Indigo League
  • Pokemon: Adventure in the Orange Islands
  • Pokemon: The Johto Journeys
  • Pokemon: Johto League Champions
  • Pokemon: Master Quest
