Shiftry can have one of three abilities: Chlorophyll, which doubles its Speed when it is sunny, but not on the same turn in which the weather becomes sunny; or Early Bird, which cuts the number of turns afflicted with the Sleep condition in half, rounded down to the nearest full number. Shiftry from the Dream World have the Pickpocket ability, an Ability allows the Pokémon to steal the opponent's held item when the opponent uses an attack that requires physical contact against it.
Shiftry takes the appearance of a bipedal forest monster. Its arms have leaves in the place of hands, has a long nose, and light-colored hair that grows longer than its body.
The leaves that grow at the end of a Male Shiftry's arms are slightly longer than the leaves that grow at the end of the Female's arms.
The only game in which Shifty can be found in the wild is Black 2 and White 2; in these games Shiftry can be found at the Nature Preserve. In all other games prior to the Generation 5 Sequels, Shiftry does not appear in the wild; the only way to obtain one is by evolving a Nuzleaf.

Shiftry is a part of the Neverused (NU) tier of competitive battling. With a great offensive typing and mixed attacking stats, Shiftry is a great offensive threat that is among the tier's most prominent Pokémon. It has some powerful STAB attacks to work with in Leaf Storm and Knock Off. Access to Sucker Punch gives Shiftry a way to hit faster foes and alleviates its somewhat lackluster Speed stat. This makes Shiftry a legitimate offensive threat especially under sun thanks to Chlorophyll doubling its Speed stat. It makes for a great Defog user thanks to its ability to threaten out a lot of the tier's entry hazard setters. A physically mixed set is the best Shiftry set which can do some great damage with its STABs and support a team with Defog or go out with a powerful Explosion. A Swords Dance set is another option that gives Shiftry a means to sweep with its powerful priority Sucker Punch and STABs in Seed Bomb and Knock Off. However, Shiftry suffers from its reliance on Sucker Punch due to a painfully average Speed stat, which can be exploited. It also has bad defenses and weakness to a lot of common attacking types.
Shiftry is also a usable option in the Rarelyused (RU) tier of competitive battling. As one of the tier's few offensive Defog users, Shiftry can deal out some good damage considering its powerful attacks that hit hard with a Life Orb. Sucker Punch is a great priority attack that gives Shiftry a way to be a late-game revenge killer, while Knock Off is a highly useful and powerful attack that removes opposing foes' items and wears them down in the process. It also has a good Special Attack stat that can allow for it to go mixed and attack with Leaf Storm. Outside of the standard Defog set, Shiftry can run a Swords Dance set that threatens a significant portion of the tier. Unfortunately for Shiftry, it has a mediocre Speed that makes it difficult to Defog in the face of offensive teams, and its poor typing gives it numerous weaknesses, including an egregious one to U-turn. It also faces competition from Flygon as an offensive Defog user, which has better bulk and speed to work with.
