Starmie (スターミ) is the 121st Pokémon in the Pokédex. It is a Water/Psychic-Type, and is known as the Mysterious Pokémon.

Starmie can use one of two Abilities; Illuminate, which increases the likelihood or encountering Wild Pokémon, or Natural Cure, which heals any Status Conditions upon switching out of battle. Its Hidden Ability is Analytic, which increases its attack power by 30% if the Pokémon attacks last.

Staryu gain the opportunity to evolve into Starmie when exposed to a Water Stone.

Starmie is in the Water 3 Egg Group, and its Egg takes approximately 5,120 steps to hatch. It takes Starmie 1,250,000 Experience Points to reach Level 100.

Game Information

Original Games

In the first four generations of games, the only way to obtain Starmie is to evolve a Staryu.

Competitive Battling

Starmie is a part of the Overused (OU) tier of competitive battling. With access to the coveted Rapid Spin, a solid defensive and offensive typing, and reliable recovery in Recover, Starmie can perform offensive and defensive utility roles very well by being able to reliably remove entry hazards. Starmie's high 115 base Speed allows it to outspeed the majority of the unboosted metagame and deal heavy damage to opposing teams with its great coverage options. It also has two great abilities in Analytic and Natural Cure, with the former pressuring switch-ins with greater damage output while the latter reduces Starmie's susceptibility to status ailments. An offensive Rapid Spin set can deal heavy damage and act as a great cleaner for offensive teams, while a more utility based set offers the ability to handle threats like Keldeo more easily and pull off a Rapid Spin with less trouble. One notable flaw in Starmie is that its bulk, while not terrible, is only slightly better than average, which is troubling when considering that Keldeo is fully capable of wearing down Starmie with repeated hits. A Dark-type weakness is extremely troubling, especially considering that Pursuit trappers can take full advantage and eliminate Starmie with relative ease. This can be somewhat remedied with Reflect Type, but that requires a degree of prediction and takes up a moveslot.
