Starter Pokémon are Pokémon given to trainers that are getting ready to start their Pokémon journey. Starter Pokémon vary from regions and thus are hard to get. In the games no starter Pokémon (except Pikachu) can be caught in the wild. Trainers can usually leave their starters alone after catching another Pokémon, but most keep them because they gained a great relationship toward them full of trust and love.

[edit] In the games
In all of the main games of the Pokémon series, all starters are given to their trainer at Level 5 and with only one damage dealing move and the rest are status ones. The trainer usually always have a choice between a Grass, Fire, and Water starter Pokémon except for a few times in different games. The rival of your game will always choose the starter that is opposite of yours or has a type advantage.
[edit] List of Starters by region
[edit] Kanto
The Kanto region consists of the games Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Green, Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen. In these games your starter Pokémon will be given to you by the Pokémon Professor of that region: Professor Oak. The starters are:
| Bulbasaur Grass |
Charmander Fire |
Squirtle Water |
|---|
Pokémon Yellow also takes place in the Kanto region. What makes this game special is that instead of the usual Grass, Fire, and Water starters, you get to start with the Electric Pokémon Pikachu.

Later on in the game you will get a chance to capture the other starters.
The Player's rival will choose a starter that has a type-advantageous over your starter (For example if you choose Charmander as your starter who is a fire type, your rival will choose Squirtle who is a water type).
[edit] Johto
The Johto region consists of the games Pokémon Gold, Pokémon Silver, and Pokémon Crystal. In these games your starter Pokémon will be given to you by the Pokémon Professor of that region: Professor Elm. The starters are:

After you make an errand for Prof. Elm after getting your starter, you will run into a weird looking guy running away. This person will become your rival, and has stolen a Pokémon starter that has a type-advantageous over yours.

Your neighbor in Hoenn (Brendan or May) will become your new rival. They already have a starter who has a type-advantage over yours. Though throughout the game, your rival kind of stops becoming a trainer. Your new rival sort of becomes Wally, a trainer you help in the beginning of the game.
[edit] Sinnoh
The Sinnoh region consists of the games Pokémon Diamond, Pokémon Pearl, and Pokémon Platinum. In these games your starter Pokémon will be given to you by the Pokémon Professor of that region: Professor Rowan. The starters are:
| Turtwig Grass |
Chimchar Fire |
Piplup Water |
|---|
Once again like in all previous versions of the Pokémon games, your rival will have a Pokémon that has a type-advantage over yours. Although this time, another trainer in the game (either Lucas or Dawn) will have a starter that is weak against yours.
[edit] Unova
The Unova region comprises of Pokémon Black and Pokémon White. In these games, like the others, the player is able to have one of 3 Pokémon; Oshawott, Snivy and Tepig.
| Snivy Grass |
Tepig Fire |
Oshawott Water |
|---|
You can obtain these Pokémon from Professor Araragi after she places a present in the protagonist's house which contains all 3 of these starter Pokémon.
