Tapu Bulu is in the Overused (OU) tier of competitive battling. It is a very strong wallbreaker thanks to Grassy Terrain boosting its Grass STAB attacks and solid coverage to complement its Grass STAB. With a nice defensive typing, it can handle a number of threats, such as Garchomp, Zygarde, Keldeo, and Tapu Fini. With Grassy Surge as its ability, Tapu Bulu can provide decent utility by allowing for it and its teammates to heal off residual damage while halving the damage of Earthquake. Its best set is a Swords Dance set with Horn Leech, Superpower, and a choice between Wood Hammer for a truck-hitting STAB or Stone Edge to round off coverage. It uses a Z-Move crystal for nuking purposes, with Bloom Doom to have an incredible attack to smash through resists like Mega Mawile, Assault Vest Tangrowth, and Magearna when used in conjunction with Wood Hammer or Continental Crush to power through opposing checks like Celesteela and Zapdos. It can also run a Choice Band set to great success, as STAB Wood Hammer puts severe damage to even resists, being able to nearly OHKO Latios and 2HKO Assault Vest Tangrowth, while having the powerful coverage to muscle through other resists. While Tapu Bulu is a very good Pokémon, it suffers from having a rather middling Speed stat that leaves it outsped by the likes of Heatran and Hoopa-U. Its ability can be counterproductive, as grounded opponents can also heal back from Grassy Terrain, making them harder to wear down.
