Tapu Koko is in the Overused (OU) tier of competitive battling, where it stands out as one of the biggest offensive threats in the tier. Its base 130 Speed stat allows for it to outspeed most non-Choice Scarf Pokémon in OU excluding the likes of Ash-Greninja, Mega Lopunny, and Mega Alakazam. Thanks to its fantastic speed tier, Tapu Koko works wonderfully as a pivot with U-turn and Volt Switch at its disposal. Its ability Electric Surge gives it a big boost to its Electric attacks, and when complemented with a boosting item, it can make Tapu Koko's attacks hit extremely hard. With Taunt, Tapu Koko can also serve as a Pokémon that can eventually wear at defensively oriented teams, giving it some versatility to work with. While Tapu Koko does not have the best bulk, it can use its resistances and immunities certainly well, being able to switch into attacks like Outrage, U-turn, Knock Off, and other resisted attacks. The best Tapu Koko set is a Choice Specs set that allows for Tapu Koko to serve as a strong attacking pivot that utilizes its STAB Thunderbolt, Volt Switch, and Dazzling Gleam very well to have well rounded coverage while serving as a pivot that can wear down at opposing teams. Tapu Koko can also go with a physical attacking set with Z-Wild Charge, which surprises Tapu Koko's typical answers like Chansey, defensive Heatran, and Assault Vest Magearna with a powerful physical attack. Lastly, an offensive pivot set with a Zap Plate allows for Tapu Koko to chip away at opposing foes while not be restrained by a Choice item at the expense of power. However, Tapu Koko is with some flaws, as its attack power when using moves that are not its Electric STAB can be underwhelming in power. The physical set is hampered by Wild Charge recoil preventing from it from spamming the attack frequently. Since Tapu Koko has average bulk, it can only switch in on resisted or weak attacks. Despite these minor flaws, Tapu Koko is a threat that is an incredible fit for offensive teams and should not be unaccounted for.
Tapu Koko is also viable in the Uber tier of competitive battling. While a niche threat, Tapu Koko can work as an offensive check to the likes of Yveltal, Ho-oh, and Primal Kyogre. Thanks to a high Speed stat as well as attacks like Nature's Madness and Electric Terrain-boosted Gigavolt Havoc, Tapu Koko can serve as a Pokémon that can wear down at opposing teams. Tapu Koko has Taunt to prevent bulkier Pokémon like Arceus formes from recovering and U-turn to provide momentum to the team. Thanks to Electric Terrain, Tapu Koko can prevent Zygarde-C, Giratina, Z-Geomancy Xerneas, and Primal Groudon from being able to use Rest. It can also prevent sleep users like Z-Hypnosis Lunala and Darkrai from being able to use their sleep moves and prevent them from freely boosting up. Tapu Koko's biggest flaw is that Ground-types give it a lot of trouble, blocking its Electric attacks and making it so Nature's Madness is the only attack it can use against them. Tapu Koko is not strong enough on its own to be able to KO threats, relying heavily on Z-Moves in order to work its niche. This makes it heavily prediction reliant, and if it ends up predicting incorrectly, it could lead to it being KOed or not having enough power to revenge kill the threats it is supposed to.
