 Competitive Battling
After spending the majority of Generation V in Ubers, Thundurus returns to the Overused (OU) tier of competitive battling in Generation VI as one of the biggest top tier threats in the metagame. It lies in a speed tier that allows it to outspeed many important threats that lie in the 110 Speed tier like Latios and Mega Metagross. Thanks to Prankster, Thundurus has priority Thunder Wave which can prove vital as it can provide an emergency check to fast threats and set-up sweepers. Its typing allows it to switch into threats like Choice Scarf Mega Scizor, Gliscor, and Mega Metagross. With Nasty Plot, Thundurus can be a frightening sweeper that can put heavy pressure on defensive teams. Thundurus has great mixed attacking stats if it chooses to go a mixed attacker route, making it very hard to counter with impunity considering its great coverage options. Its other ability Defiant can deter Defog and Intimidate users by gaining attack boosts, enhancing the viability of a mixed set. Another approach that Thundurus can take is less overall threatening but still effective in a stallbreaker set with Volt Switch and Taunt allowing for other Pokémon to take advantage of defensive Pokémon vulnerable to being set-up on. The only big flaws in Thundurus are its frailty and proneness to getting worn down by Stealth Rock. Despite that, it is a great Pokémon in both as a utility Pokémon and an offensive threat that can go a set-up route or mixed route.
Thundurus-Therian resides in the Borderline (BL) tier of competitive battling, leaving it only usable in the Overused (OU) tier. While immensely overshadowed by Thundurus as an offensive threat because of its lower speed, Thundurus-T is not to be underestimated. With a very high 145 base Special Attack, Thundurus-T can take the role of a set-up sweeper with Agility to patch up its somewhat disappointing speed. It can run an Agility set with 3 attacks or go a Double Dance route with Agility and Nasty Plot, bolstering its immense Special Attack while making itself a threat to offensive and defensive teams alike. It resists priority moves like Gale Wings Brave Bird and Bullet Punch, leaving it less vulnerable to being easily picked off after setting up. Volt Absorb allows Thundurus-T to regain health from Electric-type moves from Pokémon like Magnezone and opposing Thundurus. Unforunately, Thundurus-T does suffer from being prone to being worn down from Stealth Rock and Life Orb recoil. It is also incredibly frail, struggling to take even resisted hits like Choice Specs Keldeo's Secret Sword, making it hard for it to easily switch in.
