Blue is the player's rival in the First Generation of Pokémon games: Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow. This role is reprised in the games' Generation III remakes, FireRed and LeafGreen.

Blue also makes appearances in the Second Generation of Pokémon games, Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal - as well as their Generation IV remakes, HeartGold and SoulSilver - and the Fifth Generation of Pokémon games, Pokémon Black 2 and White 2.

As the rival in RBY, Blue is a very cocky person with seemingly little respect for the player. His natural skill and already plentiful knowledge of Pokémon is the reason he is often one step ahead of the player during the course of the game. Much like the player, his main focus throughout the story is to become the world's greatest Pokémon Trainer. Conclusively, he achieves this goal and becomes Pokémon Champion. However, his reign is short-lived, as he is soon beaten by the player.

Following the events of the original games - yet prior to the the events of the Second Generation of Pokémon games - Blue stepped down as Champion of the Indigo League. With the disbandment of Team Rocket and the solitary withdrawal of their leader Giovanni, Viridian City Gym was left without a supervisor. The role of Viridian City's new Gym Leader was appointed to Blue.

Consequently, with this new title, Blue's role transcended into the Gold, Silver and Crystal Pokémon games, serving as the eighth Gym Leader and final obstacle standing between the player and their Elite Four challenge. His disposition as a Gym Leader made little distinction between that of his reign as Champion; against conventions, Blue chose not to specialize in any particular type of Pokémon, instead using a variety of different types. Like his predecessor, Blue awards the Earth Badge to any who defeat him.
