Volcarona is in the Borderline (BL) tier of competitive battling, meaning that it is banned from the Underused (UU) tier but not used enough to be in the Overused (OU) tier. Volcarona makes for a great offensive threat with access to a great boosting move in Quiver Dance, which makes it an extremely potent threat that can destroy teams with its powerful coverage. Access to strong STAB moves in Fire Blast and Bug Buzz as well as having Giga Drain to demolish Water-types allow for it to cover its bases very well. It has a high 135 base Special Attack and decent 100 base Speed that can be further bolstered by a Quiver Dance boost that allows for it to outspeed numerous offensive threats and makes it harder for it to be taken down by special attacks. However, Volcarona is far from flawless, as its huge weakness to Stealth Rock forces teams to consistently have to remove entry hazards and can sap momentum from the team. Volcarona also struggles to get past certain threats depending on what coverage it runs, with bulky Fire and Dragon-types being massive nuisances in terms of it trying to sweep.
