Pikachu, the twenty-fifth Pokémon

Pokémon are creatures that inhabit the Pokémon World. They are seen as pets, friends and partners to many people around the world. Others, might use their Pokémon to help with jobs or chores. Some people, known as Pokémon Professors, study them. There are currently 649 Pokémon that are located around the world, found in various regions.

Alternate Colored Pokémon

Shellder in his shiny form

Pokémon can sometimes be found in alternate colors, also known as Shiny Pokémon. These Pokémon typically have nothing special added onto them except their color.

The chance of finding a Shiny Pokemon is 1/8192. This drops by a large amount in Pokémon Rumble for the WiiWare. It is unknown what the new rate is, since maps are always randomly generated. It should also be noted that in Pokémon Rumble, all Shiny Pokémon have a 100% catch rate, and a different variation of stat, such as automatic higher attack, or higher speed.

The fact that stats do not change also changes in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 3 series, where it increases the belly size from 100 to 200. It is also noted in this game that Shiny Pokémon are available. This has not happened in a Mystery Dungeon game before.

How do I know if a Pokémon is Shiny?

Shiny Pokémon will always let off a circular sparkle, or glow of some sort when you enter battle with them. Even those who have barely changed color will let off something to signal to you that the Pokémon is shiny.

Vibrava evolving into Flygon

Pokémon grow in a process known as Evolution. Training a Pokémon until it reaches a certain level causes it to grow, and shape itself into a new, stronger form. Other methods of evolution include: using a special stone on a Pokémon (as seen when applying a Moon Stone to a Clefairy, evolving it into a Clefable); trading the Pokémon to a foreign trainer (such as trading your Haunter to a friend, resulting in Gengar); and evolution dependent on location (like how the magnetism inside Chargestone Cave can assist in the evolution from a Nosepass into a Probopass upon a level-up). A few Pokémon can only evolve under conditions special to them alone. For example, when playing a Generation III game, Feebas may only evolve into Milotic when it's Beauty is maxed out through the use of PokéBlocks. However, later in Generation V, you could trade a Feebas holding a Prism Scale in order to evolve it into Milotic. This is similar to the way Haunter evolves, although a special item has to be held by the Pokémon while trading.

Evolution changes the stats of a Pokémon. Usually, it will increase the stats, but as demonstrated from Ninjask to Shedinja, these stats can potentially decrease. Ninjask's HP is depending on whatever level you are currently on, and Shedinja's HP is always 1.

Another thing that can change through Evolution is their ability. This also occurs in the Ninjask to Shedinja change, changing Ninjask's current ability to Wonder Guard. This only rarely happens, and only on certain Pokémon.

There are currently 5 different regions around the Pokémon World, and different Pokémon can be found in each area. Some are found in Wild Grass, some are found in trees, and some are even found in the ocean and in caves! Regardless, there are many different environments for you to find these creatures in.

  • Kanto - This region is filled with plants, such as trees and grass, and houses the first 151 Pokémon in the Pokédex. It is also home to the first Pokémon that was believed to be the origin of all Pokémon, Mew.
  • Johto - Johto is a region filled more with land than anything else. It houses Pokémon up to number 251 (Celebi). The region introduces brand new Pokémon, and retains some of the older ones.
  • Hoenn - This next region was filled mainly with water. It was home to even more Pokémon, going up to number 386 (Deoxys). This region introduces even more Pokémon, more trainers, and different types of people and moves. The region also introduces the concept of Double Battles.
  • Sinnoh - Sinnoh is the home of all Pokémon. It is filled mainly with land, and houses Pokémon numbering to 493 (Arceus). Sinnoh looks particularly extraordinary compared to previous games due to its use of the Nintendo DS's 3D capabilities.
  • Unova - Unova is a region based off of New York, now holding a total of 649 Pokémon (Genesect). This region introduces introduces the 2 Rival Concept. The region also brings the concept of Triple Battles, and Rotation Battles. Pokémon Black has more Rotation Battles than Triple Battles, while Pokémon White is the contrary. Unova changes based on which game you play. If you're playing Black, then you will get an urban theme. If you're playing White, then you will get a rural theme. The theme also changes depending on the season.

Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2 continue onward with this concept, adding in a change to Route 4: in Black 2 the construction was completed but in White 2 the site was abandoned when additional ruins were found. These two games also introduced the option of transferring keys via Wireless Communications, which is required to get Regice in Black 2 or Registeel in White 2.
