Sylveon is a part of the Underused (UU) tier of competitive battling. With the ability Pixilate giving it a powerful STAB to work with in Hyper Voice, Sylveon makes for a fantastic wallbreaker capable of overpowering a large chunk of the metagame, including frailer Pokémon that resist its attacks. Its Fairy typing gives it the ability to switch into certain key threats' STAB attacks, such as Hydreigon's Draco Meteor and Heracross's Close Combat. It can check some special attackers even when uninvested thanks to its great 95/130 special bulk. The best Sylveon set is a Choice Specs set that can do significant damage to a large portion of the tier barring bulky resists. It also can run a cleric set with Heal Bell and Wish, which can outdo Florges in certain regards due to better physical bulk and a more powerful STAB attack, although it lacks one-turn recovery like Florges. However, Sylveon has lackluster physical bulk when uninvested, meaning that most strong physical attacks can 2HKO or even OHKO it. It also has to play carefully against Dragon-types, as they can carry coverage that takes care of Sylveon, such as Iron Tail from the likes of Hydreigon. It has a low Speed stat that hinders its matchup against more offensive teams that apply a lot of pressure against it.
Sylveon is also a niche option in the Overused (OU) tier of competitive battling. With a nice 110 base Special Attack and a great ability in Pixilate that gives it a strong boosted STAB attack in Hyper Voice, Sylveon is capable of being a strong Fairy-type capable of dishing out massive damage with its Choice Specs set to opposing Pokémon that do not resist Fairy attacks. Access to Baton Pass and decent coverage allow for Sylveon to either gain momentum for a team or surprise an opposing foe with the appropriate Hidden Power type or Psyshock. It has great special bulk that allows it to act as a check to certain special attacking threats, although it cannot check Pokémon like Latios with Psyshock due to its physical frailty. Sylveon suffers from some massive flaws that limit its potential greatly, as it has a low base Speed for an offensive Pokémon and faces competition from Clefable and Mega Gardevoir as a Fairy-type, with Clefable capable of performing a defensive role much better than Sylveon while Mega Gardevoir has better Speed and more coverage options that Sylveon.
