Volcarona is in the Overused (OU) tier of competitive battling. It is among the tier's best Pokémon this generation thanks to Z-Moves, which give it massive nuking power to go along with one of the best set up moves in the game in Quiver Dance. It has high Special Attack and good Speed to work with, and with Z-Moves in its arsenal, it can either have enough firepower to muscle its way through certain bulky Pokémon or have the versatility to smash through would-be counters. The Quiver Dance sweeper set that it runs either has Firium Z or Psychium Z, with the former allowing for it to do significant damage to a large portion of the tier while potentially breaking through resists like Garchomp while the latter gives it a way to beat Toxapex. Volcarona's biggest weakness is its x4 weakness to Stealth Rock and vulnerability to all entry hazards, which necessitates Defog or Rapid Spin support for it to reach its full potential. Volcarona has to pick and choose which coverage options it chooses, which can lead to it being countered by specific Pokémon. For example, without Hidden Power Ground, Volcarona loses to Heatran, and without Psychic, Toxapex can stall it out. There is an abundance of Choice Scarf users that can give Volcarona trouble, as the likes of Garchomp, Keldeo, and Nihilego can take it out with super effective attacks. Nonetheless, Volcarona is a massive threat that can be extremely ruthless against teams that lack multiple ways of dealing with it.
