Walrein only had one Ability when it was introduced in Generation III, the Thick Fat Ability. This Ability cuts the amount of damage that it takes from Fire and Ice Type moves by 50%. A second Ability would become available to Walrein in Generation IV, the Ice Body Ability. This Ability restores its HP while it is hailing. A third Ability is available to Walrein from the Dream World, the Oblivious Ability. This Ability prevents it from becoming infatuated as a result from the move Attract or the Cute Charm Ability.
Walrein takes on the appearance of a light blue walrus with white fur on its head.
Walrein doesn't have any visible differences to differentiate between male and female.
Walrein appears at Endless Level 21, Forever Level 70 and Mr. Who's Den in Pokémon Trozei!.
Walrein can only be obtained by evolving a Sealeo in the first round of Mystery Dungeon games. In Explorers of Time, Explorers of Darkness & Explorers of Sky, Walrein appears at Brine Cave DPB2-B5. Walrein is exclusive to Light Adventure Squad in Mystery Dungeon 3, appearing at Wave Seas 26F-29F.
Walrein appears at Almia Castle in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, and the cave's Main Room on Mt. Sorbet in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs in the Present. In the Past, Walrein can be obtained by defeating it and obtaining its Slate in the Ice Temple Mission "Time! Time! Time!".
Walrein can be found at World Axle Glacier B2 in Pokémon Rumble Blast.
The only way to obtain a Walrein in Pokémon Conquest is to evolve a Sealeo.
Trading Card Game
Walrein appears in a total of seven sets and the 9th Movie Halfdeck. It is listed as a Rare Card in the EX Team Magma VS Team Aqua, EX Hidden Legends, EX Legend Maker (EX Card), EX Power Keepers (EX Card), Mysterious Treasures Rising Rivals and Dragons Exalted sets.
Walrein appears a few times throughout the anime under the ownership of Team Aqua members.
Archie uses his own Walrein in Chapters 230, 248, 267 and 335, the only times that Walrein has appeared in the Manga as of writing.
Walrein finds itself in the Never-Utilized Tier of Competitive Battling. While it is capable of battling without needing support from Hail to assist its defenses, which are plenty strong enough to take a hit from a type that it has resistance to and strike back with a healthy Special Attack Statistic.
For Walrein to be effective, Stealth Rock can't be present on your side of the field, and opposing Fighting-Type Pokémon cannot be opposing it, particularly faster ones as it doesn't have access to any revenge-KO moves.
